The Sonoma Green Business Program distinguishes small businesses that protect, preserve and sustain our environment. Our partnership of government agencies and utilities helps local businesses comply with all environmental regulations and take actions to conserve resources, prevent pollution, and minimize waste.
The Sonoma Green Business Program is part of the Bay Area Green Business Program. Developed by Bay Area public agencies in collaboration with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), California EPA Department of Toxic Substances Control and the business community, the program is currently offered in Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano and Sonoma counties. The Association of Bay Area Governments coordinates the program, which is implemented by Green Business Coordinators in the nine participating counties. More than 2,300 businesses and public agencies have been certified in the Bay Area since 1996.
The Sonoma Green Business Program, the first multi-media environmental compliance program in the Bay Area, served as a model for the development of the Bay Area Green Business Program.
The Sonoma Green Business Program began as a voluntary compliance program for the automotive industry and expanded to included graphic arts industries and wineries. In 1999, Sonoma Green Business received a prestigious award from the Joint Center for Sustainable Communities.
