Course Description
A major hazmat emergency is an accident that releases a hazardous amount of any substance that can cause harm to people, facilities or the environment. Accidents can happen underground, on railroad tracks or highways, and at manufacturing plants. These accidents sometimes result in a fire or explosion, but many times hazardous situations are not easily noticed.
This course will discuss the anatomy of a hazardous spill and containment. During this presentation participants will learn procedures for a hazmat team to respond to a hazardous incident in a safe and efficient manner using an incident command model. Participants will learn how planning, intelligence, equipment, and training ensure an effective response to hazardous incidents.
Learning Objectives
Participants will be able to:
- Explain three important steps hazmat responders take to stabilize a hazmat incident through safe containment methods and procedure.
- Describe at least three health effects that hazmat incidents present to the first responder's safety.
- Identify appropriate methods of decontamination used for victims, emergency responders, and equipment in order to avoid additional contamination.
