Mental Health Interventions for Disasters
Target Audience
MDs, RNs, PAs, NPs, and EMTs, first responders, hospitals, clinics, health departments, emergency medical services, extended care facilities, HRSA entities, and emergency preparedness planning partners.

Course Description
This workshop will focus on one particular mental health intervention used in managing large scale event lines, such as at dispensing sites or shelters, in the event of a significant emergency event. Participants will learn the theory and practical skills of magical techniques, "magic to distract," and how to defuse the upset and frightened "worried well."
Learning Objectives
Participants will be able to:
- Perform three magic tricks and explain how they could be used to reduce the fear of "worried well" at a dispensing site.
- List two other ways magic can be used to calm the worried well in lines.
- Explain how magic works to provide a calming effect on children and adults.
