Cultural Competency Related to Disasters

Department of Health Services staff, disaster service workers, mental health staff, Medical Reserve Corps volunteers.

Course Description
In this workshop participants will learn key elements of cultural competency and how cultural competency principles apply to disaster settings and enable service providers, managers, and administrators to create an effective service delivery system and preparedness plan. Participants will take part in an exercise to operationalize these concepts into action, and identify tasks and policies that improve an agency's ability to serve diverse populations in everyday practice and critical events.
Learning Objectives
Participants will be able to:
- List the spectrum of levels of cultural competence.
- Identify macro- and micro-level strategies to increase cultural competence during disasters and everyday work settings.
- Identify specific measures to implement in their work environments that will increase cultural competence.
