Juvenile Probation Services

Staff in the Juvenile Probation Services Division of the Probation Department provide a variety of services to youth and their families who have entered the Juvenile Justice System. The offices of Juvenile Probation are located at the Juvenile Justice Center. Juvenile Probation Officers provide a number of services to youth and their families while the young person remains in the community or is taken into custody. Probation Officers provide services ranging from Intake, Investigation, Supervision, and Placement to serving as a Court Officer.

Intake, Court, and Investigations

Intake Officers receive referrals from law enforcement agencies when juveniles have committed offenses and a determination has been made that the level of criminal involvement requires probation to evaluate the minor and the offense. Probation Officers assess non-custody and custody cases, and resolve cases by initiating and signing informal contracts, or by making referrals to other agencies or the Court. They also refer cases to the District Attorney to initiate court action.

A Juvenile Court Officer represents the Probation Department in the courtroom on a daily basis and works to advise and assist in matters appearing before the Juvenile Court. Investigative Officers prepare reports for the Juvenile Court on a minor's social history, delinquent history, family composition, school performance, and any important collateral information such as the victim's impact statement and restitution. The Probation Officer makes a recommendation for the disposition of each case that includes an individual case plan to assist the minor in the rehabilitative process.

Supervision

Supervision Officers monitor a minor's compliance with court orders and maintain working relationships with schools, police, community-based organizations, and treatment resources. Regular Supervision Officers work closely with families and the young person. In addition to the traditional Supervision caseloads, four Probation Officers are assigned to local schools to supervise students on probation and to provide guidance for early intervention. Intensive Supervision Officers provide closer supervision of youth who have become more involved with the Juvenile Justice System.

Placement

Placement Officers find appropriate homes or treatment for minors as ordered by the court. They make regular placement visits to ensure that a juvenile is receiving appropriate treatment and services and to monitor his or her progress.

Special Programs

The Home Treatment program provides supervision through electronic monitoring, field contacts and a strong therapeutic focus involving weekly individual, group and family counseling. The Abraxis Program is a 90-day transition program serving minors seven days a week that is designed to develop survival skills for those aging out of the Juvenile System.
