Adult Probation Services

The Adult Probation Division employs people whose efforts are applied to court investigations, supervision of adults on probation, jail services, and supervised adult work crews.

Court Investigation

Probation Officers in this unit write investigative reports and recommendations for the Superior Courts. Probation reports review pertinent facts and circumstances involving crimes of violence, drug offenses, sex offenses, and property crimes, the defendant's prior record of convictions and social history, the victim's loss and injury, the defendant's eligibility and suitability for probation, the feasibility of rehabilitation, and, of uppermost importance, community protection issues. The courts use these reports in determining terms of probation, prison sentences, fines, and victim restitution.

Adult Supervision

Probation Officers in this unit monitor individuals on probation to ensure that they comply with the conditions placed on their release into the community by the Courts. Supervision activities include community surveillance of the individual, counseling services, employment assistance, collection of fines and restitution, drug testing, search and seizure, and arrest of individuals who violate the terms of probation. Officers work in partnership with local law enforcement to ensure community protection. Supervising Probation Officers also write reports and appear in court to testify on issues of compliance with or violation of terms of probation. Adult Supervision includes specialized caseloads for sex offenders, drug users, gangs, domestic violence offenders, and mentally ill offenders.

Jail Services

The Jail Services Unit administers six programs that serve as alternatives to incarceration for individuals who pose no discernible threat to the community. These include Work Furlough, Supervised Electronic Confinement, County Parolee, Supervised Own Recognizance, and Work Release. Probation Officers in this program evaluate candidates for these programs, monitor compliance, and direct work by probationers on Supervised Adult Crews. Supervised Adult Crews perform thousands of hours of work each year on projects including construction and road maintenance.

Supervised Adult Crew

Supervised Adult Crew (SAC) Mobile Units complete Parks and Public Works projects with adult offenders doing work in lieu of jail, paying restitution to the community and offsetting their debt to society in a responsible, productive manner. This is a Probation Department Correctional Industries Concept (4024.1 - 4024.2 Penal Code). Currently, there are 10 SAC Mobile Units (90-100 offenders) working on Community Restitution Contracts with 15 government agencies.
