Join staff
from the Regional Parks Department on these interpretive walks around the future
park. Open access to the public will not be available until late 2004. Located
northeast of the Russian River off Eastside Road, the property was recently purchased
by the Sonoma County Water Agency and the Sonoma County Agricultural Preservation
and Open Space District. The Open Space District also made a $459,000 matching
grant to the Regional Parks Department to help facilitate park construction. The
300-acre parcel includes former gravel pits that will become recreational lakes
for fishing and boating. In addition, there will be multiple trails, individual
and group picnic areas, restrooms and parking. Park construction will be completed
in phases, and will eventually include multiple parking areas, a launch for small,
non-motorized boats, and floating docks. Participants should wear long pants
and sturdy shoes, and bring sunscreen, a hat, and drinking water. Expect an easy
to moderate walk. Space is limited and reservations are required. Call the Regional
Parks office at (707) 565-2041 weekdays to sign up, and get directions on meeting
time and place. For more information on the 40 Sonoma County Regional Parks, visit
their newly expanded website at www.sonoma-county.org/parks
