Bodega Bay Pedestrian & Bike Trail Project

Bodega Bay Trail

Highway 1 in Bodega Bay is narrow and congested, making it unsafe for bicyclists and pedestrians.

The purpose of this project is to develop a safe alternative to the automobile for bicyclists and pedestrians throughout the community of Bodega Bay. This trail and bikeway project would connect the many commercial, recreational and residential neighborhoods in the area. The primary project focus includes development of about 3.9 miles of Class 2 shoulder bike lanes on Highway 1 and 4.0 miles of multiuse trail (Class 1 bike and pedestrian pathways) adjacent to the Highway following the California Coastal Trail. A major component of this project is construction of about a mile of waterfront boardwalk with scenic overlooks of Bodega Bay and surrounding public open space. Secondary trail routes would also provide pathway connections to surrounding parks, marinas and educational facilities including Bodega Bay Marine Lab and Spud Point Marina.

Bodega Bay Trail Study Area mapA conceptual improvement plan for the project was completed in September 2005. The project consultant, LandPeople, prepared the plan, with the review and input of a Technical Advisory Committee representing community groups and public agencies. Regional Parks is the lead agency for the preparation of a program environmental document needed to adopt the plan. Project implementation will be in partnership with the California Department of Transportation, California State Parks and the Sonoma County Regional Parks and Transportation and Public Works Departments.

$150K in Measure M funds is currently programmed in FY 08 for two segments (1B and 1C)including one mile of Class 1 pathway and two 10 space parking areas at the north end of the planning area. Funding for development of these two segments is from a $535K Transportation for Livable Communities (TLC) grant, $100K in area Park Mitigation Fees and $32K from State Parks. Construction is tentatively scheduled for the summer of 2009 pending completion of the CEQA process. Another $100K in Measure M funds is also programmed in FY 07 to fund the programmatic–level environmental document.
