Regional Parks Foundation
Small Grant Program – 2008-2009 Awards

Each year the Foundation issues a request for small grant proposals from Regional Parks staff members. All staff are encouraged to submit requests, not to exceed $10,000, for projects that are not included in the Regional Parks Dept. budget. Any project is eligible for consideration as long as it will benefit one of our parks or Veterans Memorial Buildings and is accessible or available to all visitors.

Several worthwhile requests were received and the Regional Parks Foundation board approved the following grants at their November 2008 Board of Directors meeting. All of the grant funds come from private donations, including Regional Parks pass holders, businesses, clubs, and individuals. The following is a partial list of the projects approved in the 5th annual Small Grant Program:

Weather Cam at Spud Point Marina
This grant funded a web-enabled videocam placed at the Spud Point Marina. Visitors can access the videocam on the Regional Parks Department’s website, allowing a view of the bay and a quick glance at the current weather conditions.

Portable Compressor/Generator
This compressor/generator helps Regional Parks maintenance staff with a variety of tasks. This portable tool is especially handy in the more remote parks such as Hood Mountain, Shiloh, Riverfront, etc. It can also be used on many of our volunteer projects.

Utility Trailer
This lightweight and durable multi-use trailer has the capacity to carry heavy tools and equipment to maintenance and volunteer projects. It can also transport firewood and trash to and from campsites and picnic areas.

Directional Signs at Riverfront Regional Park
This grant provided funding for directional signs to be placed at four intersections along routes leading to Riverfront Regional Park. The lack of directional signage on nearby roads has made it challenging to locate the park. Directional signs will improve access and increase the appeal of this beautiful park.

Improvements to the Tolay Fall Festival
Grant funds were provided to improve and expand the very popular “Creepy Crawly Critter Room” display at the Festival. Regional Parks staff will design and build additional backdrops, habitats and educational displays.

Animal and Ranger Cutouts
This grant will also add to the fun at the annual Tolay Lake Fall Festival. Regional Parks staff will build wooden cutouts of animals and park rangers for children and their families to pose behind for creative and entertaining photos.

Chipper/Shredder – West County Trail
This piece of equipment was funded to help county maintenance and volunteer crews maintain the West County Trail. It can also be used on similar projects park-wide.

These projects total approximately $9,000 that was generously provided by donations to the Regional Parks Foundation. The Small Grant Program has been very popular with Regional Parks Department staff and has resulted in more than 48 projects completed in various Regional Parks. The 6th annual Small Grants will be awarded in November, 2009.
