Children's Memorial Grove at Spring Lake Regional Park
About the Project
 |
The two-acre Children's Memorial Grove at Spring Lake Park is dedicated to the memory of Sonoma County's children who have passed away. It is a place of peace, beauty and reflection where park visitors can walk its paths or sit and enjoy beautiful vistas of the lake or the tree covered hills of Annadel State Park. The Grove is under development now; the site has been graded, an irrigation system installed, trees planted and the paths put in.
The Regional Parks Foundation is raising money to build this beautiful Memory Shelter, designed by Praxis Architects. We also plan to construct a main entry arbor leading into the Grove. |
Granite paver stones remembering children will form the floor of the shelter and pavers expressing donor support for the Grove will line the path from the entry arbor. Negotiations are undwerway for contractors to build the entry arbor and install the first group of granite pavers. Children's Memorial Grove development and construction is funded entirely through public contributions and donated labor and materials. If you would like to make a contribution, please call 565 2041 or visit our donation page. |

Eagle Scouts Help Build the Grove
Alex Brott of Santa Rosa led a volunteer project at the Children’s Memorial Grove on October 21, 2006, to meet one of the requirements of becoming an Eagle Scout in Troop 32 of the Boy Scouts of America. Alex, along with 35 scouts and 15 adult leaders, planted 42 flowering pears linging the Grove's central path and installed a device that protects trees from damage. They also made repairs and improvements to other decomposed granite paths and to the drainage swale. This well organized Troop completed this extensive project in less than one day! |

Sculptural Tribute to Sonoma County's Children
|
 |
Thanks to a generous contribution from Dennis and Loretta Luz, the Regional Parks Foundation is collaborating with Artstart to create a sculpture honoring our children. Artstart is a Sonoma County nonprofit educational arts organization that mentors young artists by providing training and work experience while creating public art. This collaboration gives us a wonderful opportunity to involve local school age children in a project dedicated to the memory of our children. |

The mentor artist for our project is well-known Sonoma County sculptor Monty Monty. Monty is working with two young artists, Chris McKee, a student at Santa Rosa Junior College, and Alan Johnson, a junior at Analy High School. Creation of the sculpture is well underway, and will be completed this summer.
The Foundation has received a very generous grant from the Voigt Family Sculpture Foundation to create an additional piece for the Children's Memorial Grove. Work on that project will start later this year. Check this site for updates on progress of the Children's Memorial Grove. |
