Healthcare System Support

Behavioral Health Electronic Health Records (BHEHR)

The Sonoma County Behavioral Health Electronic Health Records (BHEHR) uses AVATAR software to document and manage the care provided by the Behavioral Health Division of the Sonoma County Department of Health Services.

Disease Reporting

Specified diseases and conditions are mandated by state laws and regulations to be reported by healthcare providers and laboratories to the local health officer.

Infection Control Measures

The Disease Control Unit of the Public Health Division provides guidance for infection control measures that health providers can take to reduce the spread of communicable diseases.

Medical Reserve Corps

A community volunteer health service corps consisting of trained health care professionals, mental health professionals, and non-medical community members, who desire to serve as volunteers in our community during health-related emergencies.

Prenatal and Family Planning Services Coordination

The Maternal, Child, Adolescent Health program works with healthcare providers to ensure access to care.

Specimen Testing

The Public Health Regional Laboratory provides specimen testing services to the counties of Sonoma, Mendocino, Lake and Humboldt in Northern California.

SWITS Data Management

Sonoma WITS (SWITS) is a Web-based solution that is specifically designed to meet the data management needs of Sonoma County AODS, its contract providers, and the California Department of Alcohol and Drug Programs (ADP).

Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention

CLPP employs a team of health professionals who provide services to parents, healthcare providers, and the general public.

Healthy Homes

Environmental Health receives numerous inquiries from the public regarding non-healthy home issues (substandard housing conditions) in residential living units.

Tick Test for Lyme Disease

If you have been bitten by a tick, the Public Health Regional Laboratory can test it for the bacteria that causes Lyme Disease (Borrelia burgdorferi).

Water Testing for Coliforms

The Public Health Regional Laboratory is able to test your water for coliforms and E. coli.


Licenses, Permits and Training

Animal Control Field Services

Animal Services is responsible for the enforcement of city and county ordinances and state laws pertaining to animals, primarily domestic.

Body Art Facility Inspection

Environmental Health started inspecting body art facilities and using the CCLHO guidelines as a reference document in July 2006.

Cottage Foods

The California Homemade Food Act amends the California Health and Safety Code to create a new category of food facility operation, which, unlike other food facilities, can be operated out of a home kitchen.

Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Certification

To work as an emergency medical technician (EMT) in Sonoma County, EMTs must obtain certification from the Coastal Valleys EMS Agency.

Environmental Drilling Permits

Environmental drilling is required for investigation and cleanup of contaminated sites. Various agencies have jurisdiction over these investigations and cleanups, including the Department of Health Services.

Food Facility Inspection Reports

All food facilities shall post a notice advising patrons that a copy of the most recent inspection report is available for review by interested parties. This notice is available for download.

Food Safety and Consumer Protection Programs

Food Safety Manager Certification

The Sonoma County Department of Health Services offers Food Safety Manager Certification classes based on the National Registry of Food Safety Professionals.

Fresh Water Quality Sampling: Russian River Beaches and Spring Lake Lagoon

Sampling is conducted once a week each summer between Memorial Day and Labor Day at beaches on the Russian River and the Spring Lake lagoon.

Leaking Underground Storage Tank Local Oversight

Oversees the investigation and cleanup of fuel releases from underground storage tanks in all areas of the county with the exception of the cities of Santa Rosa and Healdsburg.

Medical Waste Program

The Medical Waste Program was established by the California Department of Health Services to ensure statewide standards for uniformity in the safe handling, minimization and disposal of medical waste.

Ocean Water Quality Monitoring

Ocean water samples are collected at beaches that are visited by 50,000 people per year and are adjacent to storm drains, creek or rivers. Seven beaches in Sonoma County meet the criteria.

Paramedic Accreditation

The California Emergency Medical Services Authority in Sacramento licenses paramedics. To work as a paramedic in Sonoma County, paramedics must also receive accreditation from the Coastal Valleys EMS Agency.

Pet Licensing

Animal Services is responsible for the enforcement of city and county ordinances and state laws pertaining to animals, primarily domestic.

Public Swimming Pool/Spa Construction and Inspection

The Swimming Pool Program is responsible for the inspection of public swimming pools, spa pools and special purpose pools in Sonoma County, to ensure they are built, maintained and operated in compliance with state and local laws.

RBS training gives employees the tools necessary to make businesses successful and to keep our communities safe.

State Small Water Systems

The Water System Program provides for the oversight of Public Water Systems in the category of State Small Water Systems (SSWS)

Storm Water Pollution Prevention

The storm water management program protects our waterways and enhance our quality of life. Residents can report spills and dumping in storm drains and creeks.


Mental Health

Mental Health Services for Adults

Our mental health programs serve seriously ill adults age 18 and older throughout Sonoma County. Services are provided by County staff, community health centers, and a network of contracted personnel.

Mental Health Services for Youth and Families

Seriously emotionally disturbed (SED) children and adolescents to age 18 are served by a system of care that includes County staff working in partnership with Schools, the Valley of the Moon children's home, juvenile health services at Los Guilicos, and community partners.

Crisis Assessment, Prevention, and Education Team

The Crisis Assessment, Prevention, and Education Team (CAPE Team) is a prevention and early intervention strategy specifically designed to intervene with transition age youth ages, 16 to 25, who are at risk of or are experiencing first onset of serious psychiatric illness and its multiple issues and risk factors

Crisis Intervention Training for Law Enforcement Personnel and Mobile Support Team

Over the past five years, 300 officers countywide have received crisis intervention training. The MST responds to law enforcement requests.

Consumer and Family Support Services

Behavioral Health Crisis Response Services

Anyone living in Sonoma County who is having a mental health crisis can get help 24 hours a day, seven days a week by calling our 24-hour Emergency Mental Health Hotline: (800) 746-8181. The call is free.

A two-tier program for multiple DUI offenders. Provides clients the opportunity to address their addiction while remaining active members of the community.
