In Sonoma County, food facilities are required to have at least one person, an owner or employee, who has passed an approved food safety certification exam.
Environmental Health and Safety offers Food Handler Safety Certification classes based on the National Registry of Food Safety Professionals. To register, call (707) 565-6565.
There are three ways to register for the food handler certification class:
If you register for both the class and the test you will receive a free booklet so that you can study before the test.
There is a maximum of 35 applicants per class, filled on a first-come, first-served basis. A completed application with payment is required to reserve your space in the class. Please call (707) 565-6542 for seating availability.
The textbook "Food Safety Management Principles" in English or Spanish are highly recommended, but not mandatory. These textbooks cover seven basic elements of food safety, include full-color graphics, and are easy to read.
To be admitted, applicants must bring an approved photo ID (see application (pdf) for approved types).
Applicants are expected to take the class/exam for the intended dates. However, a one-time postponement to the next available class is permitted with a notice of no less than one day prior to the class/exam date.
