Conversation at beachPrimary Prevention with Positives

Primary Prevention with Positives (PwP) is based on the public health model of prevention of disease transmission that educates the persons living with the disease. A community working group met from April to June 2002 to review local data, discuss best practices, and to assess local needs and current capacity to deliver PwP services. The working group recommended that men who have sex with men (MSM) would be the most appropriate target population for the first year of the PwP initiative.

A project was developed by Face to Face and Food for Thought, community-based agencies that provide basic needs support for HIV+ individuals and primary and secondary prevention services to MSM. The project provides capacity building services for providers on risk assessment, and counseling and referral skills. Support for community norms that encourage the discussion of HIV serostatus and risk behaviors, raised prevention awareness in the private sector, specifically with businesses is also provided.

Capacity among the HIV prevention providers in the county continues to be strengthened by a series of facilitated learning opportunities.
