Preparedness and Public Health Threats: Addressing the Unique Needs of the Nation’s
Vulnerable Populations
|
The Sonoma County Department of Health Services is proud to announce Public Health
Week from April 2 through April 8, 2007. The theme for this year's Public Health Week is "Preparedness and Public Health Threats: Addressing the Unique Needs of the Nation’s
Vulnerable Populations." Several vulnerable populations have been identified this year for particular focus, since they may be disproportionately affected by disaster:
|
|
- Single mothers with children living in the household are encouraged to make sure there is enough food in the house for feeding children for 3-5 days, keeping an updated first aid kit and having a plan for where children will be when not with their parent.
- Hourly workers and their employers also need to assure enough food for 3-5 days for their families, have a plan on how to get to work if transportation systems are impacted and knowing what the employer’s policy is about emergency situations.
- Finally, people living with chronic disease should consider who will check on them if a disaster has occurred, having enough food and prescription medications for at least a week and identifying alternative locations or accommodations for essential services.
Each year during Public Health Week, the Department releases the Public Health Annual Report (pdf), which describes Public Health accomplishments in the past year.
Our Public Health Week celebration also highlights Public Health Champions, individuals who have played a significant role in promoting the health of our community in Sonoma County. Profiles of each Public Health Champion are provided in the Public Health Annual Report for 2006 (pdf). These profiles describe the impact each Champion has had on the community, and recognize their innovation, creativity, and extraordinary achievement.
