The Sonoma County Breastfeeding Coalition began in 1996 with this mission:
"To educate and empower women to breastfeed; to encourage breastfeeding-friendly attitudes, policies, and images in the community; to promote unity among breastfeeding professionals and advocates; and to increase public awareness of the value of breastfeeding."
Working towards this mission, the Coalition has:
- Created information packets that are given to breastfeeding mothers when discharged from the hospital;
- Provided education to health care professionals;
- Sponsored the annual "Positive Images of Breastfeeding" photo contest;
- Supported activities celebrating World Breastfeeding Week;
- Provided breastfeeding stations at local health fairs and street fairs, including the Santa Rosa Downtown Market.
In addition, the Coalition has developed the following guides to support breastfeeding mothers and help connect them with the information and services they need.
Sonoma County Breastfeeding Resource Guide (English ) (Spanish ) (pdf)
This guide, provided by the Sonoma County Breastfeeding Coalition, contains contact information for a variety of breastfeeding support services and programs.
Counseling Guidelines: Breastfeeding and Maternal Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Use (pdf)
These guidelines were developed by The Sonoma County Breastfeeding Coalition, in collaboration with the Sonoma County Perinatal Alcohol and Other Drug Action Team, the Drug Free Babies program, and the Public Health Division of the Sonoma County Department of Health Services.
