Approximately 22 horses in California have been found to be infected with Equine Herpes Virus. The virus can cause mild or severe disease in horses. As of June 1, no infected horses have been reported in Sonoma County.
People do not get sick from this virus even if they come into contact with an infected horse.
The California Department of Food and Agriculture is taking the lead for California on this outbreak. They are following this outbreak carefully and providing instructions to horse owners on how to protect their horses. For more information including regular updates and instructions to horse owners, go to the California Department of Food and Agriculture website.
