Chronic disease, including cancer, heart disease, stroke, chronic lung disease and diabetes, accounts for the majority of deaths in Sonoma County. Many chronic diseases are considered preventable and are linked to lifestyle behaviors such as smoking, alcohol abuse, poor nutrition and lack of exercise.
Prevention efforts currently underway related to diet and exercise are the Community Activity and Nutrition Coalition and the Healthy Eating Activing Living Community Health Initiative. Program staff members are involved in several collaborative projects aimed at increasing the activity level and encouraging healthy eating among Sonoma County residents.
