Hazardous Materials
The
Hazardous Materials (HazMat) Division is responsible for the enforcement
of the regulatory-based Hazardous Materials Business Plan Program,
Hazardous Waste Program, Underground Storage Tank Program, Aboveground Petroleum Storage Act (APSA), Accidental Release
Program, and the portions of the Uniform Fire Code that address
hazardous materials. Inspections of businesses are conducted on
a routine basis, and the division often works in conjunction with
the County’s Environmental Health and Permit and Resource
Management Departments.
The
division prepares the Sonoma County Hazardous Materials Area Plan
and the Offshore Oil Spill Plan for the County. The Hazardous Materials
Response Team is also part of this division, and consists of volunteer
community members and Department staff who are trained to respond
to any level of hazardous material incident in the county.
Several members of the division are also certified Hazardous Materials
Instructors who are available to teach the many aspects of hazardous
materials response.
