On January 27, 2003, a new 9-1-1 emergency dispatch system for Law Enforcement, Fire and EMS was launched. It is fully integrated with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and links all but a few police and fire departments within the County, as well as all fire and medical first responders. This system ensures that the closest appropriate resource will respond in the minimal amount of time.
In 2009 there was a major upgrade to the GIS system which allows additional information to be available to emergency responders right in their response vehicles. This information includes; updated addresses, hydrants, HAZMAT facilities, and special occupancies. A big part of emergency response is preplanning. The GIS mapping tool allows for preplanning information be available to agencies from neighboring jurisdictions without the need of keeping updated paperwork in the vehicles.
