SECOND PROSECUTOR IN TWO YEARS APPOINTED TO THE SUPERIOR COURT
District Attorney Stephan Passalacqua announced today that Deputy District Attorney Gary Medvigy has been appointed by Governor Schwarzenegger as a Sonoma County Superior Court Judge. Schwarzenegger appointed Medvigy to a new position, which was created last year. Medvigy was sworn in yesterday and began his judicial duties this morning, handling a misdemeanor calendar in Department 7.
Judge Medvigy was hired as Deputy District Attorney in 1988 and held the position
for 19 years. He handled many serious cases for the District Attorney’s Office, including the prosecution of the former priest Donald Kimball for sexual assault offenses. Medvigy is also serving in the United States Army Reserve, and was recently promoted to Brigadier General.
Medvigy is the second prosecutor in two years to be appointed to the Sonoma County bench. In 2005 Schwarzenegger appointed then-Assistant District Attorney Kenneth J. Gnoss to the superior court.
The District Attorney’s office held a reception on August 3, 2007 honoring Medvigy’s years of service as a Deputy District Attorney and his elevation to the bench. His colleagues bid him farewell and wished him luck.
