District Attorney Stephan Passalacqua announced today that his office will seek to have John Mark Karr extradited from Boulder, Colorado to face five misdemeanor counts of possessing child pornography in Sonoma County. The decision was made today after Colorado authorities informed the Sonoma County District Attorney that they will not be proceeding with charges against Mr. Karr in their jurisdiction.
District Attorney Passalacqua stated, "We filed this case against Mr. Karr in 2001 and the same merits in proceeding with the case then, still exist today." Passalacqua added, "Defendants convicted of possessing child pornography are required to register with local authorities as sex offenders; Mr. Karr should be no exception."
Karr has a "No Bail" Warrant issued by a Sonoma County Superior Court Judge in December 2001. It is anticipated that transportation arrangements for Karr’s extradition from Colorado will be made in the coming days. His appearance in Sonoma County is not expected to take place until the first or second week in September at the earliest.
