SONOMA COUNTY CELEBRATES THE SILVER ANNIVERSARY OF
NATIONAL CRIME VICTIMS' RIGHTS WEEK
"Justice Isn't Served Until Crime Victims Are"

April 10th through the 16th is National Crime Victims’ Rights Week and will be observed in Sonoma County by crime victims and survivors, as well as by the advocates, volunteers, and professionals who serve them. Twenty-five years ago, the idea of crime victims having rights was a new concept. Today there are over 10,000 justice system and community based programs which provide supportive services by informing victims of their rights, and helping them cope with the physical, emotional, and financial impact of crime. One of those programs is the Sonoma County District Attorney’s Victim Assistance Center.

According to District Attorney Stephan Passalacqua, "Anyone who is a victim of a crime can receive information about their rights and the services available to assist them. If you or someone you know is a victim of a crime, the Victim Assistance Center can help."

The entire community is invited to attend a Candle Light ceremony on Wednesday April 13th at 6 p.m. at the Hall of Justice. There will be a special bell ringing to honor survivors of crime and those close to them. Any one who wishes to be recognized, or recognize someone they care about is welcome to participate. The ceremony is a moving tribute to the courage and strength of crime victims, and a reminder that they should not be forgotten. Refreshments and candles will be provided. "Crime effects all of us and how we live. This is an opportunity to take positive action, and be part of the justice process by showing your support to those who have been victimized," encourages Tracy Lamb, Program Director of the Victim Assistance Center. For more information contact the Victim Assistance Center at 565-8250.
