After 27 years of dedicated public service to the citizens of Sonoma County, Chief Deputy District Attorney Kathleen D. DeLoe completed her final workday as a prosecutor on Monday, September 20, 2004. She began her career as an interviewer with the District Attorney Family Support Division in 1977. While working and raising a family, she attended Empire Law school. In 1984 she was hired as a deputy district attorney in the Family Support Division, and transferred to the Criminal Division a year later, where she remained for most of her career.
In 1990 Ms. DeLoe was promoted to the most senior position as a deputy district attorney. Six years later she became the first woman to serve as a Chief Deputy District Attorney in the Sonoma County District Attorney’s Office. She was also the first prosecutor in Sonoma County to present DNA evidence before a jury and successfully obtained a murder conviction in that case.
Among her many accomplishments, Ms. DeLoe played a significant role in efforts to reduce domestic violence in Sonoma County. She helped create the Sonoma County Domestic Violence Court, one of the first in the state. She was particularly proud of training prosecutors, peace officers, and judges in the law of domestic violence. She is also responsible for many of the domestic violence protocols currently followed by local law enforcement investigators.
In addition, Ms. DeLoe traveled to the Ukraine with a contingent of Sonoma County officials and met with Ukrainian leaders on issues of domestic violence. She supervised the Domestic Violence and Child Abuse Units in the District Attorney’s Office for several years, overseeing the work of prosecutors, investigators and counselors.
At an office gathering, District Attorney Stephan Passalacqua praised Kathy DeLoe for her dedication to her job, and thanked her for helping improve the criminal justice system in Sonoma County. Ms. DeLoe stated, “I have tremendously enjoyed working with so many dedicated coworkers in this great office and hope that my work over the years has made Sonoma County a safer place to live.”
