District Attorney Stephan R. Passalacqua announced that the Sonoma County District Attorney’s Victim Assistance Center has been awarded a grant from the federal government to sponsor a local program celebrating National Crime Victims’ Rights Week (April 18-24, 2004). This year’s theme is Victims’ Rights: America’s Values.
In 1981 President Ronald Reagan proclaimed the first Victims’ Rights Week, calling for "a renewed emphasis on, and an enhanced sensitivity to, the rights of victims." Each April since then, communities across the nation have held public rallies, candlelight observances and commemorative activities to promote awareness of victims’ rights and needs.
The Office for Victims of Crime will reimburse the Sonoma County District Attorney up to $5,000 for expenses incurred in conducting local public awareness activities. Sonoma County is one of only 60 jurisdictions across the United States to receive this award. Tracy Lamb, Director of the Victim Assistance Center, stated, "This grant will provide us with the opportunity to work with many victim service organizations and bring attention to the rights of crime victims in Sonoma County."
A luncheon is currently planned for Monday, April 19th at noon at the Vineyard Creek Hotel conference facility in Santa Rosa. Guest speakers will address issues involving victims of crimes. A candlelight vigil will also be held on the Hall of Justice steps in Santa Rosa on Wednesday, April 21st at 6:00 p.m. Mr. Passalacqua requested citizens to "Please join us in supporting those who have survived the impact of crime and help put an end to violence in our community."
Anyone interested in receiving additional information or how to receive victim assistance, is invited to contact the Victim Assistance Center at 707-565-8250.
