Lapsed EMT Certification


Lapsed EMT Certification
If you have been certified as an EMT in the past, but do not hold a current certification, you may be able to renew your certification status by following one of these procedures. To determine which one, look at the expiration date on your most current EMT certification card.

Certification is lapsed less than 6 months:

Step Description Material Needed
1 Complete 24 hours of approved CE Copies of CE certificates
2 Complete a skills competency verification Completed state skills competency verification form, signed by one of the following:
  • Licensed paramedic
  • Certified EMT
  • Licensed RN, or
  • Licensed physician

A copy of the signee's valid certification must be included with your completed form.

3 Fill out CVEMS application Completed, signed application

4 Provide proof of age and identity (you must be 18 or older) Copy of your legal photo identification
5 Provide proof of current CPR course completion Copy of your CPR card
6 Provide proof of past EMT certification Copy of your most recent EMT certification card
7 Pay recertification fee Check or money order for $25

Certification is lapsed more than 6 months but less than 12 months:

Step Description Material Needed
1 Complete 36 hours of approved CE Copies of CE certificates
2 Complete a skills competency verification Completed state skills competency verification form, signed by one of the following:
  • Licensed paramedic
  • Certified EMT
  • Licensed RN, or
  • Licensed physician

A copy of the signee's valid certification must be included with your completed form.

1 Complete 48 hours of approved CE Copies of CE certificates
2 Complete National Registry testing Proof of passing the NREMT skills and written exams
4 Fill out CVEMS application Completed, signed application

6 Provide proof of current CPR course completion Copy of your CPR card
7 Provide proof of past EMT certification Copy of your most recent EMT certification card
8 Pay recertification fee Check or money order for $25

Certification is lapsed more than 24 months: You are not eligible for recertification. To work as an EMT in the Coastal Valleys region, you must complete the initial EMT certification process.
