Section 8 Waiting List
To apply for the Sonoma County Housing Authority´s Waiting List, new applicants must now use a computer that has internet access to complete a Preliminary Application. Effective July 1, 2012, paper Waiting List Questionnaires will no longer be accepted.
When completing the Preliminary Application, be sure to enter all information requested in regard to your living situation, household composition, income, and any preferences for which you qualify. If any information is left blank or the information has been entered incorrectly, you will receive an error message.
Once your information has been successfully submitted to the website, you will receive an Applicant I.D. code. Please record your Applicant I.D. code in a safe place. You will be unable to access your information on the website without that code.
Within 7-10 days after submission of the Preliminary Application, the Housing Authority will send you a letter, confirming that you have been added to the waiting list.
All applicants will be contacted in accordance with the preference system, which is set by the Housing Authority in compliance with Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) regulations. The Sonoma County Housing Authority uses the following Local Preference system:
When your name is reached on the waiting list and you are issued a Section 8 Voucher, you will be required to reside in the jurisdiction of the Sonoma County Housing Authority for one year before transferring to another Housing Authority.
Once you are on the Waiting List, it is important to notify the Housing Authority in writing when your mailing address changes. If mail that has been sent to you is returned to the Housing Authority by the Post Office, your name will be removed from the Waiting List. All notifications of address changes must be on the Section 8 Waiting List Update Form. When the change has been made, the Housing Authority will send you a confirmation letter stating that the change was made.
The Housing Authority is unable to estimate how long you will have to wait for assistance due to the length of the Waiting List and the slow turnover in the housing assistance programs.
When your name reaches the top of the Waiting List you will be asked to submit necessary documentation to determine your eligibility for assistance. After all paperwork is received and you are determined eligible, you will be asked to attend a program briefing. At the briefing you will be issued a Housing Choice Voucher and you will be able to start your search for housing.
