HOMELESS COUNT

The first Homeless Count was conducted in Sonoma County in 1988 to get a better understanding of our homeless population.

In 2001, the Board of Supervisors provided funding for a second countywide enumeration of homeless people, which was conducted during a 9-day period from October 19 - October 27, 2001 by Maureen Shea & Associates, working in conjunction with Sonoma State University.

In 2005, HUD began requiring each local Continuum of Care to conduct point-in-time data collection on the number of homeless people living in their community in order to remain eligible for federal funding. The 2005 Homeless Count PDF Icon was the first HUD-mandated count. It was conducted by the Sonoma County Taskforce for the Homeless in the required 24-hour period during the night of January 26-27, 2005. Additional counts must be conducted at least every two years.

The 2007 Homeless Count was conducted by the Sonoma County Taskforce for the Homeless on January 31, 2007.
