BACKGROUND:
Valerie Brown was born in Kansas City, Missouri. Her father was a state zoologist and wetlands expert, and she spent much of her childhood in the outdoors in the Trimble Wildlife Area. Received a bachelor's degree in Secondary Education and English at the University of Missouri in 1972. Earned a Master's Degree in Counseling Psychology from Lindenwood College, Missouri, and was licensed in 1978 as a marriage, family and child counselor. Served on the Sonoma City Council from 1990-1992 as mayor and vice-mayor, served in the State Assembly representing District 7 from 1992-1998 where she was the Chair of Governmental Organization, Chair of the Budget Sub-committee #2, (Health and Human Services).

DISTRICT INFORMATION:
The First Supervisorial District bounded on the north by Franz Valley School Road, the Napa county line to the east, to the west by Petaluma Hill, Summerfield, Brush Creek, Wallace and Riebli Roads, and San Pablo Bay to the south. Population is concentrated in the City of Santa Rosa (Bennett Valley, Rincon Valley & the community of Oakmont), the City of Sonoma and the adjacent unincorporated communities of Kenwood, Agua Caliente, Glen Ellen, El Verano, Boyes Hot Springs, Schellville and Vineburg.

RESPONSIBLITY:
The Board of Supervisors of the County of Sonoma is charged with the responsibility of establishing policy to guide the various functions of the County and, where necessary, to establish procedures by which functions are performed. Supervisor Brown’s assigned Functional Group of County Departments for the year 2008 is Health and Human Services. Special Assignments include the California State Association of Counties (CSAC) Board of Directors, Bay Conservation Development Commission (BCDC), the Sonoma County Indian Gaming Local Community Benefit Committee, Sonoma County Transportation Authority, the Sonoma/Marin Area Rail Transit II Board of Directors and the Sonoma County Methamphetamine Prevention Task Force. Supervisor Brown is assigned as an alternate member of both the North Coast Supervisors Association and the Local Agency Formation Commission (LAFCO). Supervisor Brown was elected as 2nd Vice President to the National Association of Counties (NACo) in August 2006, and is responsible for serving on the Executive Committee, Financial Services Corporation, the Advisory Board for the National Center for Counties, and is liaison to the Membership Committee, Audit Committee and Member Services and Programs. In July 2009, she will be sworn in as President on NACo of Nashville, TN.
