Quick Start Tutorial


This quick start tutorial outlines a few common tasks a user might want to perform within the ActiveMap website.
  1. How do I find a location by address?
  2. How do I find a location by Assessor Parcel Number (APN)?
  3. How do I generate a parcel report?
  4. How do I generate a buffer?
  5. How do I print a map and/or add a map into a document?

1) How do I find a location by address?

  1. In the Main Toolbar, click on Searches.
  2. Select Address as your search criteria.

  3. The Search Address dialog box will appear.

  4. Enter part or all of an address. If you enter a partial address (e.g. 120, Shaw, etc.), the system will return all possible matches within the Search Results Panel.

  5. If only one match is found then the map will zoom to and select the parcel. If there is more than one possible location, page through the locations five at a time and select a location from the Search Results Panel by clicking on the select checkbox Checkbox.

    In order to zoom into the selected parcel click on the zoom tool Zoom to Select Icon. Information about the parcel in question will be listed in the table found in the Search Results Panel.

    Note:

    a) If you have a parcel selected, the selection color will not be displayed in the printed map.

    b) Within the ActiveMap application you are allowed to search by address, but address & owner information will not be displayed or reported back to the screen. This is because of California Gov. Code 6254.21 which states the following:

    "No state or local agency shall post the home address or telephone number of any elected or appointed official on the Internet without first obtaining the written permission of that individual."

    To obtain owner information in regards to a specific property, please contact or visit the Sonoma County Assessor's Office.

2) How do I find a location by Assessor Parcel Number (APN)?

  1. In the Main Toolbar, click on Searches.
  2. Select Parcel Number as your search criteria.

  3. The Search Parcel Number dialog box will appear.

  4. Enter part or all of an APN. If you enter a partial APN the system will return all possible matches within the Search Results Panel.

    "No state or local agency shall post the home address or telephone number of any elected or appointed official on the Internet without first obtaining the written permission of that individual."

    To obtain owner information in regards to a specific property, please contact or visit the Sonoma County Assessor's Office.

3) How do I generate a parcel report?

Once you have found the property you are searching for either by the Address or Assessor Parcel Number (APN), complete the following steps to view and print a parcel report.

  1. Click on the Parcel Report expand button Expand Arrow to expand the panel.

    Note: If the Parcel Report panel is not viewable, scroll down the left panel using the slider bar.

  2. Click on the Select Parcel tool Select Parcel Tool Icon and then click on the parcel of interest.
  3. View the Parcel Report in the Parcel Report Panel.

  4. Click on the Print Report tool Property Report Toolbar to print the report. A print window will appear and you will be able to send the report to your selected printer.
  5. To clear the report and selected parcel, click on the Clear Report tool Property Report Toolbar.

    Note:

    Within the ActiveMap application you are allowed to search by address, but address & owner information will not be displayed or reported back to the screen. This is because of California Gov. Code 6254.21 which states the following:

4) How do I generate a buffer?

ActiveMap gives you the ability to define a buffer around a selected parcel of interest. All parcels which fall within the buffer distance specified will be selected and displayed within the map display area, as well as their attributes displayed in the Search Results Panel.

  1. Click on the Buffer Menu expand button Expand Arrow to expand the panel.

    Note: If the Buffer Menu panel is not viewable, scroll down the left panel using the slider bar.

  2. Select a Buffer Distance from the drop-down menu.

  3. Click on the Buffer Parcel tool Buffer Report Toolbar and then click on the parcel of interest.
  4. As a result, the map will zoom to the full extent of the buffer, and all parcels residing within the buffer's specified distance will be listed in the table found in the Search Results Panel.

    Note:
    If you have a buffer or a parcel selected, the selection colors and buffer will not be displayed in the printed map.

  5. A comma-delimited file (CSV) will also be generated. To view or save the file, click on the Buffer Results CSV File link found within the Buffer Menu Panel.

  6. A File Download window will appear. You will be prompted to Open to view the file or Save the file.

  7. When the file is opened, detailed parcel information is provided. Please disregard OBJECTID, IS_SELECTED and Shape fields. These are automatically created by the application when the file is created.

    When open, the file can be saved by choosing toolbar File - Save As.

  8. To clear the buffered and selected parcels, click on the Clear Buffer tool Buffer Report Toolbar.

5) How do I print a map and/or add a map into a document?

Once you have found the property you are searching for either by Address or Assessor Parcel Number (APN), complete the following steps to print a map.

  1. Turn on and off any layers you want to display on the map using the Map Legend Panel. Toggle layers on or off by clicking on the checkbox next to the layer symbology.
  2. In the Main Toolbar, click on the Print Map tool Print Map tool icon.

  4. To print, choose toolbar File - Print. A print window will appear allowing you to send the map to your selected printer.

    To save a map, choose toolbar File - Save As. When saving the map locally, the saved document will display as:

    Print htm file path

    With every subsequent map saved, this map will be overwritten unless the map file name is renamed. Therefore, with every map saved, ensure to rename the htm and be sure to include the file extension .htm.

    Further, with every map saved, there will be an associated folder consisting of several files which will display as:

    In the renaming of the .htm, the associated folder will also have to be renamed exactly the same.

    Within the additional file folder, there are several files which will display as:

    The PNG file contains the map display area image and can be inserted into a document as a picture. To note, all of these additional files can be added as well.
